The Water Resources Planning Branch, Water Resources Agency, Ministry of Economic Affairs, commissioned the Biodiversity Research Institute, Ministry of Agriculture, during 2023 to 2024 to implement the project “Integration and Application of Ecological Survey Results for Centrally Managed River Basins.” This project targeted 26 centrally managed river systems, compiling a list of species of concern and producing ecological intelligence maps for each basin, including environmental information layers and comprehensive species distribution layers for species of concern.
The outcomes of this project can assist ecological assessment teams and engineering professionals in more accurately identifying the distribution of ecological species around water infrastructure during the initial screening phase of ecological evaluations. Through an ecosystem-based approach, ecological assessments can be incorporated into the planning, design, construction, and maintenance phases of flood control and river governance projects, in order to prevent or reduce disturbances and impacts on the habitats of species of concern caused by construction activities.
